Celebrate Town Meeting Day
The first Tuesday of March is Town Meeting Day in Vermont and is a cause for celebration.
An Annual Tradition
It takes place during the very beginning of the transition from winter to spring, best known and described by the title mud season. Which could be a reason for joy for some but that is not why I celebrate.
Community Comes Together
Town Meeting and pre-town meeting are moments when we come together and pay close attention to school and town budgets as well as other town business.
Express Gratitude
It is a time to express gratitude to our volunteer boards for their dedication and especially to our hardworking road crews for keeping the roads open. In any average year, plowing, grading sanding, replacing culverts and other standard repair work is very demanding. In recent years, the extreme flooding has required extreme responses and getting it done is nothing short of a miracle.
Attending Town Meeting brings me literally closer to my neighbors, while learning about the many challenges and successes facing Moretown and Vermont each year.
Respectful Discussion
Given the turbulence of national governance, I find some solace listening to a moderator following Robert’s Rules of Order and the very act of participating in discussion and voting by voice; yeah or nay.
Democracy Requires Participation
Participation is a requirement for democracy to flourish and on Town Meeting Day we participate and celebrate by attending, voting and understanding that our future is in our own hands still.
