Snowy Winter Home Safety Tips
Isn’t all this snow great?!
We’re experiencing a wonderful winter with above average snowfall. This is great for skiing and all kinds of outdoor recreation but can also cause some problems at home. While we are currently experiencing a lull in snowstorms, March can often bring more snow than any other month, so best to be prepared!
Clear vent pipes are crucial during winter, especially in Vermont, where heavy snow can easily block outdoor vents and lead to dangerous situations. Here are some steps you can follow to safely clear vent pipes:
Identify the Vent Pipes
Locate the vent pipes: They are typically on the roof or side of the house and are essential for your heating system (like furnace, water heater, and dryer vents). Look for pipes that are capped with a hood or a mesh screen.
Inspect for Snow or Ice Blockages
Look for visible snow buildup: If snow has accumulated around the vent pipe, it could block airflow, which might cause your heating system to malfunction or result in carbon monoxide buildup. Use a flashlight to check inside the pipe (if possible) to ensure it’s clear of ice or debris.
Remove Snow
Use a broom or long-handled brush to gently clear snow away from the vent pipe. Be cautious not to damage the pipe. Avoid using sharp tools: This could damage the vent or create leaks. Shovel carefully: If snow has piled up in front of the vent or surrounding area, clear the area to allow proper airflow.
Dealing with Ice
Warm the pipe: If ice is blocking the vent, you can try using a hairdryer to gently thaw the ice. Do not use open flames (like a torch) as it could damage the pipe or create a fire hazard. Salt or vinegar: In some cases, using a mixture of salt or vinegar can help break down ice. But be cautious with these methods to avoid damaging the pipe.
Check for Carbon Monoxide Risks
If your vent pipe is blocked, it can cause carbon monoxide (CO) to back up into your home. Make sure to check that your CO detector is working. If you notice any issues with your heating system or feel that something is wrong, ventilate the area immediately and call a professional.
Prevent Future Blockages
Install a cover or guard: Consider installing a vent guard or screen to prevent debris and heavy snow from accumulating around the vent pipe. Inspect regularly: Periodically check your vent pipes during heavy snowfall to avoid snow buildup and ensure they remain clear.
Call a Professional if Needed
If you’re unable to clear the vent pipe yourself or if you notice any damage, it’s best to call a professional HVAC technician to ensure everything is functioning properly. Keeping your vent pipes clear will help prevent any disruptions in heating and ensure your home is safe during Vermont’s snowy winters!
